Difficulty engaging 5th gear on Golf 5 | VW

Good morning,

I am having difficulty engaging fifth gear on my Golf 5.

I have already replaced the slider at the end of the shift cables (white plastic part).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

After adjusting the grounding with the fixing pin, the circuit works a little better. Thanks 👍

Is it difficult to engage or does it keep popping out? The 5th gear might be defective. How many kilometers does it have?

They had problems with 5th gear, specifically the synchro. If the gear linkage adjustment is OK, it will probably come down to replacing the 5th gear including the synchro.

Has 197,000 on the odometer. Difficult to engage, but doesn't pop back out.

The gears could be shifted perfectly until recently, despite 197,000 km. Is there an adjustment option on the shift cables?

Is the right hand ✋ permanently on the gear knob. If yes, is the shift fork worn? Regards, Christian

Hi Christian, thanks a lot for your reply, but the hand is only used for shifting.

In what way is the gear difficult to engage?

If it's difficult to get in and possibly makes noises, then the synchronization may not be good anymore.

If you're simply not engaging the gear properly, then either another joint has some play, or you may just need to adjust the gear linkage.

Of course, it could also be that the clutch is not disengaging properly. After 200,000 km, it won't be in the best condition anymore. P.S. The shift fork itself won't be worn; it usually doesn't come into contact with rotating parts 😉

5th gear is sometimes difficult to engage, but it doesn't make any noise. I'll try adjusting the gear linkage and see if I can do it myself. Regards, and thanks, Richard.

I now have 216,000 km on the odometer.

The gears, especially 1st, 3rd and 5th, are still difficult to shift.

Stupid question, could this be related to changing the transmission oil?

    Kind regards, Richard
