Starting Problem | AUDI

My car only starts with starting fluid; when it's warm, you have to crank it for a very long time before it starts.

Read the fault memory before you take everything apart. Could have several causes

Does it start normally when cold?

  3. Christian H.

    Only with starting fluid

Replace the fuel filter if it has not been replaced for a long time.

If a tester is available, read out the error memory to see if any errors are stored. And then process them accordingly.

The starter motor tends to jam when hot.

I read the diagnostic trouble codes and it said engine speed too different

Sounds like a defective temperature sensor.

The engine management light usually doesn't light up in that case.

A diagnostic tool can be used to read the value indicated by the temperature sensor and whether it matches the actual temperature.

  7. Christian H.

    Yes, I read it out.

  8. Franz K.

Ah okay, but that could also be a defective crankshaft or camshaft sensor 🤔

Hello, check the fuel pressure to see if it holds the pressure when the engine is off.

With diesel engines.... Connect a diagnostic tool and compare the target/actual rail pressure. When starting, the pressure must suddenly rise to approximately 250 bar. If this is not the case, take a sample to check for metal shavings and unscrew the control valve from the high-pressure pump. If it looks like it does in the photo, it is basically a total write-off...

Have you checked the battery? With old batteries, the starter motor does not reach the minimum speed. Holger had mentioned that before. The open-circuit voltage of the battery should be at least 12.4 V.

    Possibly ignition coil...

  13. Christian H.

    The car is a diesel

  14. Christian H.

Yes, I think it was even 13

  15. Christian H.

The car has a distribution pump

  16. Christian H.

The pump draws the diesel forward

Yep, sorry, I overlooked that, I had it recently on a 190e. Last weekend I had an A6 2008 with a similar problem... it was due to the glow plug connectors, all broken and 2x broken cables that you didn't see at first glance.

Does it run on all cylinders when it runs on its own? Was the diesel filter replaced? Is everything properly sealed? Install transparent hoses to see if it's "drawing air".

  19. Christian H.

All cylinders are firing. The diesel filter is new. I'm checking the hoses in the tank today.

Did you check the fuel leak hoses? 😁
