Differential noise and vibrations during acceleration | BMW

Hello, for about a month I have a rattling noise from the area of the differential. I put it on the lift and when letting off the gas, a clicking was heard at the differential. I don't know exactly if it is really the differential. Now the car started to vibrate very strongly when accelerating, could this be related? What could it be, drive shaft, propeller shaft or is it really the differential, would be really grateful for help.

Hello Sebastian, since you are actually the first real tester who has created a post and other users are only slowly coming to the platform, it may of course take a while until the first answers arrive. But the email has only just been sent out to the potential testers. This is just for information, best regards on behalf of Team FabuCar😊

Is the ABS signal on? You would hear the differential. Check if the drive shaft to the wheel has a jolt in the joint. And whether the tire has a bulge. But it can also be the wheel bearing.

The ABS is not working. I'm ruling out the wheel bearing because the noise doesn't get louder when cornering hard to the right or left, mostly only when disengaging the clutch or under partial load. I need to check the drive shaft. Thanks 👍🏻

I also have a 1-series with differential problems in my clientele. It hums loudly, so that the car also vibrates slightly. I unfortunately cannot say for sure whether it is the same problem as yours. Otherwise, please post a video of the noise, if you can hear it on the lift, it should be easy to find.

Hey Patrick, I'll do that tomorrow and upload it 👍🏻

I used to have loud noises from the rear axle differential area on my 1 Series. In my case, the main bearing (driveshaft to differential) was completely worn out, so that the driveshaft had about 1cm of play all around and therefore hit the heat shields, body and exhaust...

Here's the noise I'm referring to. The rattling always occurs when disengaging the clutch or under very light partial load.

The only thing I can hear in the video is wind noise and a chirping sound in the background. Neither of these have anything to do with the differential. You should check the driveshaft/differential again on a lifting platform. You are welcome to have a second person drive on the platform while someone looks/listens from below or records the noise on video.

So it was the flex disc or the screws, since one was missing, that eliminated the vibration and also the clacking and banging under the car
