DTC intervention on BMW E87 120d | BMW

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with a BMW E87 120d with about 210,000km, model year 2010.

The DTC intervenes spontaneously again and again without it needing to or being necessary. Sometimes it brakes the vehicle very hard, then you have to switch off the DTC so that you can drive normally again. Meanwhile, it also intervenes when the DTC is switched off.

It occurs regardless of whether driving straight or cornering.

Fault memory in the engine, transmission, chassis and DTC/DSC/ABS is empty…

I have also already done a parameter run for the wheel speed sensors and there is nothing conspicuous. Wheel bearings are also OK after visual inspection. Drive shafts too.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks a lot and greetings

Patrick

Already checked

The user is experiencing spontaneous DTC intervention in their BMW E87 120d, even when DTC is turned off. There are no fault codes, and wheel speed sensors, wheel bearings, and drive shafts appear to be in good condition.

It's the rusty ABS ring. If you look closely, you can see the scoring marks from the sensor. Which sensor ring did you buy?

Check the rear pulse generators for sources of failure that cause them to break.

Grab an oscilloscope and check the signals from your ABS sensors. At least one will be out of line. Then, as Christian nicely said, take a look at the pulse wheels on that wheel. This is a very common mistake

Suggestion: Remove both front left (FL) and front right (FR) wheel speed sensors and reinstall them with a washer. The reason for this is so that the sensors are a little higher and no longer rub on the half shafts.

Oh... I don't like that at all. Rather, it is possible that a ring has burst.

I wouldn't do that either. Don't underpin anything that doesn't belong there, rather check first whether it's coming from the sensor or sensor ring. These tend to burst or rust through.

The ABS sensor was the fault for me. To be precise, it was the rear left for me and a while later the right. Now it's quiet. It is also possible that something is wrong with the ABS ring.

Here's a video of the problem. The car drives normally when you turn off the DTC. I'll check the ABS rings soon.

Yes, clearly the same problem as always 😉 ABS rings, rear axle

Whew, I bought the first ones at Salmann Auto Parts. They cost almost €200 and after the first winter they were just as bad as the original ones. My buddy, who has a workshop, ordered the second ones for me. They cost less than €30 and are much better quality. But now I have to go there again on Monday and ask which manufacturer it was. I don't know anymore. They had a blue and white packaging.

I had exactly the same problem on both sides, one after the other. Washers work wonders, it's been running for about 30,000 km without any problems since then.

I also replaced the ABS rings on mine after seeing that they had been pushed up by the rust on the drive shaft. I then removed the drive shafts on both sides and replaced the parts. Remove the rust to restore the seat of the rings. A little rust protection can work wonders there. They cost €10 each, are made of aluminium and are absolutely no-name. Over 20,000 km without any problems. It was also important that the error only disappeared when I had also installed new ABS sensors. €15 each. So the whole repair is feasible for €50.
