Air conditioning system fails shortly after filling | RENAULT

Last year, the following parts were replaced by a friendly specialist workshop, also due to troubleshooting:

- AC compressor

- AC condenser

- AC dryer

- Evaporator temperature sensor

After replacing the sensor, the system ran for 3 days.

Yesterday, according to the workshop, 1000g of refrigerant was extracted and refilled with 1050g.

The system worked until noon today. Now no effect again.

I have great confidence in the workshop. But somehow they are currently in a dead end.

Does anyone have a useful suggestion?

Thanks

I went to Renault today and the fault was found. The fault is an open/defective circuit in the EGR valve. As a result, the engine control unit locks the air conditioning to have sufficient engine power.

If the workshop has suitable diagnostic equipment/tools, this shouldn't be a problem; with the amount that was missing, it should have worked before. It should be checked using a diagnostic device to see whether any faults are stored/whether all sensors, i.e. interior temperature, are plausible / coolant temperature/ evaporator temperature/ whether the pressure switch is OK, whether the A/C compressor starts, whether the radiator fans are working, etc. Then, of course, whether the system is leak-proof, whether the flap adjustment works and then at the latest the problem should be localized.

The defroster flap may be linked to the automatic climate control system. However, this should appear as an error in the diagnostics.

I'll pass the information on to the workshop.

Possibly check the pressure switch (if it is a switch, simply bridge it to test it)

Pressure test to check for leaks in a seal

Does the compressor engage? On some vehicles, you can see it on the compressor itself. But there should also be a fluctuation in engine speed when it is switched on. Does the car have manual (AC or star button) or automatic climate control?

It should have a piezo pressure sensor. You cannot "test" this, nor bridge it. Use a diagnostic tool to display the pressures in the system. If everything is OK here, try applying external power to the compressor. Does the AC work then? Does the radiator fan work when the AC is on?

Check the actual values of the air conditioning system! Is the pressure correct, are the temperature sensor values correct, is the interior fan running, does the radiator fan start, is the compressor energized?

Are you sure the refrigerant charge is correct? If there is too much, it will switch off or freeze and then refuse to work.

Capacity according to the workshop: 1050g

  11. Rene

According to my documents, 1000g +- 35 grams

Does it have rear air conditioning? Sounds like a lot. I can only check tomorrow, but I need the VIN.

Espace IV has 1000g, that's correct

    There is automatic climate control

I just went back to the workshop. Currently, they can't say where the fault lies. All previous information is OK. All measured values are within the normal range. Nevertheless, the air conditioning only ran for 24 hours after being refilled. What I noticed is that there is no condensation under the car. Does that have something to do with my problem?

  16. Frank A.

Oh yes, early next week the workshop will get a new Gutmann diagnostic device, which is supported online.

Please provide me with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It should have been provided when the vehicle was selected.

If the air conditioning system is working sporadically and not at all in hot weather, and the refrigerant level is still OK, and there are no errors stored in the air conditioning system's fault memory, then the air conditioning system control unit must be programmed and configured at Renault. And no, to answer the question in advance, this can only be done by Renault.

If the left and right sides have different temperatures, i.e. the temperature from both vents is different, then you will need a new control unit for the air conditioning system.

There was an OTS several years ago.

Hello, unfortunately the AC is still not working. But I just noticed that despite the temperature being set to 16 degrees, the interior is being heated. Could it be that a stepper motor is defective, and that's why the AC isn't working?

You can easily check if the air conditioning is working by simply touching both pipes in the engine compartment. One should be hot, the other cold.
