Drive shaft replacement - how much oil to refill? | FORD

Hello,

The CV boot is torn and there are noises coming from the front axle. Therefore, I would like to replace the entire drive shaft. How much oil needs to be refilled into the transmission?

1.5 tdci

6-speed manual transmission

Thank you

Oil is probably not needed. When pulling the shafts, oil rarely runs out.

Actually, the drive shaft has nothing to do with the transmission oil, as the drive shaft itself is lubricated with grease.

When pulling the drive shaft out of the transmission, transmission oil flows out. The question is how much....

If the shaft is pulled out of the transmission, will some transmission oil leak out?

The transmission should have 2 drain plugs and one fill plug. The fill plug also serves as a level check. Fill with oil until it runs out of the fill plug.

Sorry, that's not correct. If no oil leaks out when the drive shaft is pulled, oil is almost always missing. With almost all manual transmissions, some oil should leak out when a drive shaft is pulled.

There are sources in forums that say that the fill level screw would be too much and half a liter should be extracted....

In my Astra H, almost 1 liter was refilled after the long drive shaft was pulled out and replaced.

The drive shaft is connected to the gearbox on one side, and when you completely remove the shaft, oil usually leaks out. Almost all vehicles have a gearbox oil filler screw. The appropriate gearbox oil is then filled in there until it runs out of the screw. Then the oil level is correct 😉

Your transmission has a total capacity of 1.6 liters.

It is important to use the correct transmission oil.

Here is the appropriate specification of the oil:

    WSS-M2C200-D2

The oil level is correct when the oil is about 10 mm below the filler opening. If the oil is leaking, I would unscrew the 8mm Allen screw at the bottom and replace the entire transmission directly. Then fill in the 1.6 liters, and the oil level will be perfect.

    Something's wrong with the transmission!

I'll do that and report back

If you replace the complete oil, it will definitely work. The data is from the workshop manual👍

If there is a filler plug, fill until it flows out. If not, leave it completely off, switch off the reverse switch and fill with oil according to the manufacturer's specifications for the filling quantity.

Then you have too much oil in it.

I did it exactly like that. Drained completely and measured. It was 1.6l. I refilled it with a hand cylinder as well
